Today, my 92 year old Grandmother (affectionately known as "GG" by Nolan) went to be with Jesus. I write this post with mixed feelings. Sadness overwhelms of course, but knowing that she is with our Lord and Savior after passing very peacefully and without pain is comforting to say the least. She passed with her 3 beloved children by her side after suffering from complications due to colitis and sepsis.
My Grandmother was quite a lady. Spunky is an understatement. An avid bridge player, and lover of cats, she was incredibly sharp - up until the very end - and could recall stories from the past without a second thought. She loved to knit, crochet, play the piano, but MOST of all - she loved sports! Yes, my Grandmother was in hospice with her earphones on cheering for her fav, the Wildcats. Incredible golfer, my Grandmother. While living in Iowa, she golfed daily - and once golfed her age. Unusual maybe for the stereotypical woman - let alone a Grandma - to be such an avid sports fan, but her passion was obvious and she never missed a game. She raised her children in Iowa, and her profession was physical education teacher. Her husband, Laverne passed on at an early age. Grandma was a snowbird (she lived in Arizona in the winter and Iowa in the summer), and a bit more recently resided solely in Arizona. I have many fond memories of visiting her in Arizona, where for many years she was a "House Mom" for a UofA sorority. Christmas vacation was great fun - we had this huge house to ourselves when all her "kids" would go home to their families.
I want to share what I learned from my Grandma. Things that may be taken for granted by some, but have left her legacy imprinted on my heart.
Grandma believed in the power of forgiveness. Time and time again, she forgave.
Grandma's higher priority was in relationships - she constantly reached out to others, and her friendships were deep and longstanding. She could chit chat with about anybody.
Grandma taught me the importance of being positive. Her attitude about life is truly inspiring. I'll never forget her saying many times "you play the cards you're dealt!!" or "it'll be better tomorrow."
Grandma aged gracefully, and was pleasant and encouraging. I'll always remember her saying "This getting old isn't for sissies." and then chuckling.
Grandma placed such value on independence. She was a young widow, but was always so very strong and happy with herself and her own pursuits.
Grandma considered education an utmost priority. She passed this legacy several generations down for sure! (Got that from both sides=)
Grandma exercised her mind and her body, leaving a lasting impression of the importance of balance in our lives.
GG will be lovingly missed, but we are truly grateful for her time on earth with us. Nolan got to meet her just once, and she gave him a little leopard stuffed animal that he carts around everywhere. (along with monkey, moose, bear, big cuddle and little cuddle) - yes we're going thru another stage - my kid needs a purse. Now GG gets to watch all of our little ones growing up from heaven - someone has to let Ozzie (her husband's nickname) know all their names=)

Oh, I am so sorry to hear GG has passed, but what a wonderful tribute. She sounds like a truly inspirational woman, and I'm sure she will be missed immensely. What a great picture of her with Nolan!
